The X-men - 1980's Recruits

It was the 1980's that X-men hit their straid. Not only with recruitment but with storylines. The Dark Phoenix story and the Days of Future Past, probably the most famous X-men story lines, took places then. New characters were introduced. Kitty Pryde (then Sprite) joined just before the Dark Phoenix saga but wasn't seen with the team until after. Dazler was introduced but didn't join the team til later on. Rogue, Rachel Grey (Phoenix 2 at the time), Pyslocke and Forge joined soon after. Magneto even changeds his ways and was put in charge of the New Mutants while Professor X was taken to the Shi'Ar empire to heal. The first truely non-mutant and non-human, Longshot, joined.

Joined In: X-men #129 (1980)

Notes:At the start of the Dark Phoenix saga, Prof X and Emma Frost both detected a new mutant, Kitty Pryde, and both went to recruit her. Liking the X-men better, she helped them escape from the Hellfire Club and went to join them in the X-mansion after the Dark Phoenix saga. She stay with the stay for a long while using the name Sprite before changing it to Ariel. After she was captured and trained in the art of killing by Ogun, she received training from Wolverine and changed her name to Shadowcat, the name she was used ever since. She is the long time lover of Colossus. After the Morlock Massacre, she helped set up Excalibur and became quick friend with Rachel Grey, before eventually returning to the X-men.

Joined In: Uncanny X-Men #168 (1983)

Notes:Lockheed is an alien dragon (no not like Fin Fang Foom) that appearred in a story that Shadowcat told to Illyana once. Months later, she was surprised to find a entire race matching her story dragons. Lockheed became her friend and rarely leaves her side. He went with her to join Excalibur and returned to become a member of the Astonishing X-men team as a double agent for SWORD.

Joined In: Uncanny X-men #171 (1983)

Notes:Before joining the X-men, Rogue was a member of her foster mother's, Mystique, Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, before she absorbed the powers of Ms Marvel (Carol Danvers). Having absorbed too much and having trouble with her mind, she turned to Xavier, something Carol Danver (who punched her to the moon), and the X-men didn't approve of. Eventually though she became a valued member of the team, and was eventually elected their leader, something that surprised even her.

Joined In: Uncanny X-men #188 (1984)

Notes:Rachel Grey is the "daughter" of Jean Grey and Cyclops, who cames from the Days of Future Past universe. She came back in time after her mother was pronounce dead. She joined the team but had a few heartbreak, including her father married to some one else and that some one was pregent with her Older brother, Cable. After the team was thought dead, she joined Excalibur where she became close friends with Kitty Pryde. She was later cast back into the timestream only to whine back in the present and a slave to Elias Bogan. She was later rescued by the Extreme X-men and then with them rejoined the main X-men team, under the name of Marvel Girl, her mother's first codename. She has since left the team to help her uncle Havok, defeated her other previously unknown uncle Vulcan, as a member of her grandfather's Corsar Starjammers.

Joined In: Uncanny X-men #200 (1985)

Notes:When Magneto was transformed into a child, he was placed under the care of Moira MacTaggart, who tried to manipulate his mind so that he would turn away from evil. The effect of this didn't take effect until Xavier asked Magneto to take over his institute and lead the New Mutants. He then joined the X-men. However the effect soon wore off and he was back to his old self again. He has on occassion aided his mortal enemies, like during the Twelve storyline.

Joined In: Uncanny X-Men #213 (1986)

Notes:Psylocke is the twin sister of Captain Britain. She was staying at the X-mansion when the Morlock Masacre took place and help with it recovery. After an attack from Sabretooth, she earned the X-men trust and was made a member of the team. She later gain a new armor type costume. During the course of her membership she had her mind swap and place in a body of a Assasin, Kwannon. Betsy original body later died of the Legacy Virus, leaving Betsy body stuck in Kwannon body. She later was killed by Vargas but was later revived when she was a member of the X-treme X-men. She became and lead the Exile for a while before returning to the X-men during Dark Reign.

Joined In: Mephisto VS...#3

Notes: Longshot first met the team when they were captured by Mojo for his perversed TV show in the Mojoverse. He helped them escaped and stay behind to lead a resistant, against Mojo. He later wound up on Earth where he became the first non-mutant non-human to join the X-men. There he fell in love with Dazzler and later married. They went back to Mojoverse to fight the resistant and eventually "killed" Mojo. However Longshot was later killed and Dazzler was sent to Earth. Longshot was later revived and joined the Exiles before being reunited with Dazzler during the Excalibur and Exiles team-up.

Joined In: Uncanny X-men #255

Notes: Forge was a contrator for the government when he met Storm, who had a brief relationship with. He joined the X-men when they help him beat Advarsary. He later left the team when it was discovered that he was responsible for inventing the device that made Storm lose her powers. He then was made the leader of the X-factor and had a brief relationship with Mystique. He later returned to the X-men as a engineer.
